University of Houston Editorial Style Guide

First impressions do make a difference. Printed and on-line publications, distributed to internal and external audiences, are the embodiment of our university. They are a vital part of our image. While we are a mix of colleges and institutes, centers and programs, we are one university - the University of Houston - and it is important to show consistency in the way we present ourselves. That is the purpose of this style guide.

This guide is based upon The Chicago Manual of Style, the style system appropriate for most publications at the University of Houston; please refer to this manual for any questions not answered here. The Associated Press Stylebook is used only for news releases and UHCN News. The dictionary of choice is Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.

These style rules are intended to maintain consistency. The substance of your message and the creativity in your writing still belongs to you.

For any questions about editorial style please contact the Office of Publications at 713-743-8170.
