Master Of Science
In School Library and Information ScienceThe school librarian is an integral part of a school’s team of professionals, providing services at the elementary, middle or high school level. This program equips candidates with the theories and practices of library and information science through the study of the foundations, principles, and ideas of the discipline, including those related to management, selection of children’s and young adult literature, cataloging and classification, reference and bibliography, and the latest training in electronic media and technology.
The school librarian of today is an active teaching member of the faculty, working with the classroom teacher to integrate information access skills into the curriculum. On any given day, an effective librarian may be found instructing students in the use of subject-specific Web sites and databases for their research; introducing short story collections to an English class; or highlighting novels involving environmental issues with a group of science students.
Our program objectives include developing critical thinking about literature and research in the field; educating students to be prepared for inevitable social and technological changes; planning for evaluation and development of services; and encouraging commitment to high standards of practice and responsibility.
With the diverse cultural backgrounds of children in school today, our School Library and Information Science program stresses the importance of effectively working with students from diverse backgrounds and in diverse settings and of promoting multiculturalism within education.
At UH-Clear Lake, our program is intended for candidates who plan careers specifically in elementary or secondary school libraries in both the public and private sectors.
Candidates may choose from the following options:
- Master of Science in School Library and Information Science with School Librarian Standard Certification Early Childhood -Grade 12 (EC-12
