Biotechnology Program

Welcome to the Master of Science in Biotechnology website at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Biotechnology draws on many disciplines within the biological sciences. Students who enter the Biotechnology program gain deep insights into the biomedical, agricultural, and environmental sciences.

The Master of Science program in Biotechnology at UHCL turns out scientists with a thorough understanding of Biology and its related disciplines. Graduates apply fundamental principles of biology to develop and manage products and processes, and to refine the techniques and tools used in those processes. Their course of study qualifies them for careers in research and development, teaching, or private industry.

Several aspects of UHCL’s Biotechnology program make it an ideal environment in which to pursue a Master of Science.

Our highly qualified faculty grounds its students in the knowledge and practical skills a career in biotechnology demands.
The UHCL campus serves Houston and Galveston, world-renowned centers of medicine and biotechnology
Our close neighbor, NASA‘s Johnson Space Center, support research in biotechnology
Our program meets the needs of working professionals; it offers flexible course scheduling including evenings and weekends.

The University of Houston-Clear Lake is the first university in Texas to offer all three concentrations for an Master of Science in Biotechnology: Molecular Biotechnology, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology, and Biotechnology Management & Marketing. As a result, students have a greater opportunity to tailor their coursework to their precise interests.

Concentration Objectives

he Molecular Biotechnology concentration gives graduate students skills in advanced laboratory biotechniques. At the same time, it offers them an advanced understanding of the theoretical aspects of the biological processes involving biotechnology in cell, developmental, and molecular biology, in physiology, in microbiology, and in toxicology. The Bioinformatics/Computational Biology concentration gives students skills in bioinformaticsî ºskills which include recognizing and managing databases, data mining, and developing algorithms. The Biotechnology Marketing and Management concentration gives students broad-based management and marketing skills, empowering them to assume mid-management positions with Biotechnology firms.
