Teachers New to Online Teaching

The University of Houston – Clear Lake offers three courses that have been approved by the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN) for the training of teachers who want to teach within the TxVSN. For teachers new to teaching online UHCL offers INST 6437 Interactive Distance Learning. This course creates highly professional distance learning teachers and course designers. It does so by involving its students in the study of instructional design, hands-on course design, as well as the history and application of distance education. INST 6437 Interactive Distance Learning accomplishes its objectives by adhering to the standards for online teaching specified by the North American Council for Online Learning (iNACOL) For example, the correlations of the first three classes of the course are,

Class 1 - Introduction to Moodle and Basic Concepts of Distance Education
Meets iNACOL Online Teaching Standards B, C, F, L, M

Class 2 - Introduction to Distance Education Basic Concepts
Meets iNACOL Online Teaching Standards B, C, D, F, G, L, M

Class 3 - Evaluation of Distance Education Courses
Meets iNACOL Online Teaching Standards B, H, I, J, L, M

INST 6437 Interactive Distance Learning also engages students in weekly discussions based upon recent distance education related articles in order to sharpen their ability to utilize innovations in teaching online. In addition, students learn how distance education was conducted before the advent of the Internet so that they can learn from the past.

INST 6437 Interactive Distance Learning enables students to use a variety of Web 2.0 based tools in the design of online courses. Most importantly, all course participants are required to construct their own online course using the course management system Moodle. The Moodle-based course must consist of enough material to cover at least three weeks of secondary school instruction.
In addition, INST 6437 Interactive Distance Learning students are required to systematically evaluate the online courses designed by their classmates in order to make certain that they are able to recognize areas of online course strength as well as areas that need improvement.
