Master of Science
in Instructional TechnologyThe Master of Science in Instructional Technology provides professional education in instructional technology, with an emphasis on distance education. The program of study is appropriate for people in diverse economic sectors including healthcare, higher education, business and industry, and, most importantly, teachers from preschool through high school. If you want to build skills but don’t want a Master’s degree, consider earning a UHCL Instructional Technology program certificate in online distance education or in performance technology. If you are a Texas State-certified teacher who teaches or wants to teach technology, you can advance your career goals by earning a Texas State add-on certificate. Each of three certificate programs prepares current Texas State-certified teachers to successfully pass the corresponding State Examination for an add-on technology certificate.
UHCL Instructional Technology graduates have been hired for positions in every major economic sector in the region. work as instructional designers in higher education institutions such as San Jacinto College, College of the Mainland, the University of Houston, Houston Community College, and the University of Houston - Clear Lake. They are directors of technology in K-12 school districts such as Irving, Texas.
Graduates have held design positions in the healthcare sector in organizations such as The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and The University of Texas Health Science Center. Our graduates are also employed in large for-profit organizations such as SpaceHab, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, AIM Funds, Shell Oil, and Texaco. They are also found in instructional design firms such as iMediait and Tietronix. When you graduate from UHCL with an Instructional Technology degree you become part of a professional community that extends to business, healthcare, petrochemical, and educational communities. In addition, UHCL Instructional Technology graduates have successfully matriculated into related doctoral programs at Texas A & M, the University of Houston, the University of Kansas, and the University of Georgia.
If you are not quite ready to earn a master’s degree, you can begin by earning one or more of our Instructional Technology certificates. For example, The Online Distance Educator Professional Development Certificate will enable you to design and teach effective on-line courses. The Performance Technology Certificate will enable you to analyze human work performance problems and design solutions for them. The UHCL Instructional Technology program also has three Texas State Teacher add-on certificates,
- Technology Applications (8-12),
- Technology Applications (EC-12), and
- Master Technology Teacher.
If you enjoy the work and do well, you may apply your certificate courses to achieving the Instructional Technology Master’s degree.
In addition, the Instructional Technology Master’s degree program can be earned completely on-line or face-to-face. With the recent addition of courses concentrated into eight week semesters, the 36 credit degree program can be completed within a year and a half of full time study.
The graduate plan in Instructional Technology leads to the master of science degree that prepares graduates to systematically design training and instruction.
