Chemistry Program
Calling all UHCL BS CHEMISTRY MAJORS! If you haven’t already taken Physical Chemistry I & II there’s something important you need to know: you’ve probably heard that these courses are quite tough and very mathematical, and that not everyone passes first time so, to help people to pass Phys Chem, from Fall 2009 there will be a NEW PRE-REQUISITE for Physical Chemistry I & II: Mathematics for Biochemistry & Physical Chemistry
If you’re planning to take Physical Chemistry I in Fall 2009, you need to take Math for Biochemistry & Physical Chemistry in Spring 2009: sign up NOW for Mathematics for Biochemistry & Physical Chemistry CHEM 4130, but may be listed as CHEM 4931 just for Spring 09 Dr A.J.MacDermott, Spring 2009 M 1900-2150, B
A friendly, easy-going, step-by-step course for success in math taught by Dr A. J. MacDermott, who teaches Phys Chem, has taught Biochem, and is sympathetic to the problems you face if you really hate math: Dr MacDermott will take you right back to square one, and teach you exactly the math you need for success in Biochem and Phys Chem. Each class includes a problems session in which you get individual help. You will learn basic math from scratch: algebra, manipulating formulae, ratios, logs, differentiation, integration, how to plot graphs, and how to get the units right. ….all illustrated with examples you’ll meet in Biochemistry and Physical Chemistry, including pharmaceutical examples for pre-med students.
If you’re already an A student in math…well, this class will be an easy ride for you and you’ll get an A to make your GPA even higher (and it never hurts to brush up on math!). But if you’re one of the many people who feel held back by math difficulties, now you at last have a chance to iron out those difficulties once and for all with a caring chemistry professor who takes the time to give you one-on-one help and considers no question too dumb.
Mathematics for Biochemistry & Physical Chemistry is a required pre-requisite for Physical Chemistry I from Fall 2009, and for Physical Chemistry II from Spring 2010, but is only recommended for Survey of Physical Chemistry and Biochemistry I.
