Computer Science Program

Servers

The Computer Information Systems and Computer Sciences program manages many servers for CIS and CS students. Students administer these servers under the supervision of Krishani Abeysekera, our lecturer and systems administrator.

The SCE Web server (sce.uhcl.edu) hosts web resources for current students and alumni. Administrators constantly upgrade server space; CIS alumni can keep their accounts indefinitely after their graduation. The server supports a potpourri of server-side technologies, such as ASP.NET, PHP, and CGI-Perl. It supports databases such as MySQL and MSSQL. It runs the Windows operating system.

The DCM server (dcm.uhcl.edu) also runs Windows and supports many CSCI courses, such as CSCI4134 Advanced Development with Java, CSCI 4230 Web Application Development, CSCI 5633 Web Application Development, and CSCI 5733 XML Application Development. A National Science Foundation grant helped UHCL launch the server.

A major grant from Sun Microsystems helped UHCL launch the Sun Server; it runs the Solaris operating system. It supports many CSCI courses, such as CSCI 3333 Data Structures, and CSCI 3532 Advanced Data Structures.

We also host many Linux and Windows servers to support regular courses, capstone projects, and thesis plans.

With the exception of the computer security laboratory, students requesting support should contact Krishani Abeysekera. Direct technical questions to Krishani or to her Research Assistants (RA). Direct questions for the computer security laboratory to Dr. Andrew Yang.

UHCL maintains university level servers through University Computing and Telecommunications (UCT). These servers allow students to use UCT laboratories and access email. Requests and technical questions concerning university labs and servers should be directed to the UCT Academic Laboratory Support Center.
