Faculty Handbook
From Faculty Handbook Approved June 1988
For the University of Houston-Clear Lake, the following shall be applicable:
The following ranks are considered part of the tenure track: instructor (except as noted below), assistant professor, associate professor, and professor.
1.1 Instructor
The rank of instructor is reserved for incoming faculty who have not completed their terminal degree prior to the beginning of employment. Appointment will be on a year-to-year basis for a period up to three years. In order to be considered for appointment as assistant professor, proof of completion of a terminal degree (letter of degree completion from the university or transcript showing conferral of the degree) must be provided to the appropriate Dean by December 15th of the third year. If the term ends by January 1st of the third year, proof of completion should be received by September 15th of the third year. If the terminal degree has not been completed within the time frame, a letter indicating non-reappointment as an instructor is issued to the instructor under the Separation Guidelines. Conferral of the terminal degree is a requirement for appointment as an assistant professor.
The rank of instructor at a campus of the University of Houston System shall be in the tenure track. Time spent as an instructor at that specific campus shall be counted in the probationary period. Faculty members may not be awarded tenure at the rank of instructor. Under special circumstances the president may waive the inclusion of an instructor in the tenure track by written mutual agreement. (UH System)
1.2 Assistant Professor
The probationary period for a nontenured assistant professor shall not exceed seven years. Up to three years of prior full-time collegiate level teaching at the rank of assistant professor or above may be credited to the probationary period. The decision to terminate the services of a nontenured faculty member may be made at any time during the probationary period. A recommendation for promotion to associate professor must be accompanied by a recommendation for tenure unless otherwise justified by special circumstances. In special cases, the president may request that tenure be awarded to assistant professors. (UH system)
1.3 Associate Professor
A candidate for an appointment or promotion to associate professor should have a record of accomplishment and appointment shall have no force and effect until approved by the Board of Regents.
In all appointments to the faculty, there must be assurance of compliance with the affirmative action policies and procedures of the UH-Clear Lake campus.
The probationary period is the time a faculty member spends under appointment in a tenure track position prior to being awarded tenure. It shall not exceed seven years, and the explicit number of years shall be specified in the appointment letter. Up to three years of prior full-time collegiate level teaching at the rank of assistant professor or above may be credited to the probationary period. Prior years credited toward probation must be approved by the senior vice president and provost and specified in the letter of appointment. For probationary appointments, the final and mandatory review for tenure shall take place in the year prior to the final probationary year (e.g., year six of seven-year probationary period). Any faculty member appointed for a probationary period should understand that the number of years designated as a probationary period is the maximum period of probation and not a minimum commitment of employment. The decision to terminate the services of a nontenured faculty member may be made at any time during the probationary period subject to appropriate date of notification and does not require charges or demonstrated professional unfitness.
