UHCL's Alfred R. Neumann Library contains more than 375,000 volumes and more than 1.6 million items in microform. The library subscribes to over 2000 periodicals and leading newspapers, and houses a variety of media. A curriculum laboratory consists of a textbook collection, curriculum teaching guides and materials. The library is a depository for U.S. federal and Texas government publications.
Library patrons may conduct independent data base searches at no cost by accessing a CD-ROM data base network. Subject areas covered include: general reference, business, computer science, education, environment, government, humanities, literature, life sciences, medicine, psychology and social sciences. Other databases, including the full text of about 1,000 journals, may be accessed from the library via the Internet at no cost. Additional databases which incur charges are available through the library's reference department.
University transportation and communication links provide joint use of materials in libraries at the University of Houston, UH-Downtown and UH-Victoria. Books and photocopied materials are available through a national interlibrary loan network. The' library occupies approximately 100,000 square feet and contains study space for over 1,000 users.
The purpose of the reserve collection in the library is to make Required Reading available to all members of a class. To assign reserve status to materials for the mere convenience of the students of faculty is not a legitimate application of the reserve policy.
2.1 Faculty must fill out a Reserve List Request Form for adding titles to reserve. Reserve books must come from the library collection or be supplied as personal copies by the professor. Books borrowed on interlibrary loan are not eligible for reserve status. Instructors will be notified concerning materials not available for reserve. Titles not owned by the library or supplied by the professor must be ordered. Six weeks is the minimum time required to receive items.
2.2 Photocopies must be provided by the professor or department. The library strictly observes United States Copyright law. Copying from "consumable" works such as workbooks, exercises, tests, etc. is not allowed under the copyright law.
2.3 All reserve requests will be processed in order of receipt. At least three working days should be allowed for materials to be placed on reserve status.
2.4 All materials will be removed from reserve status at the closing of each term. The library is not responsible for personal materials not picked up within one week of the end of the semester. New listings must be submitted for each semester.
