Special event celebrates NASA and first lunar landing
Travel back to 1969 and relive man’s first step on the moon when University of Houston-Clear Lake hosts the “Fly Me to the Moon: A Community Celebration of the First Lunar Landing” Saturday, July 18, 2009, 6 p.m. The free event will honor NASA Johnson Space Center and all who contributed to the success of those first steps.
A 1969 family-style picnic will set the tone for the event that will allow guests to enjoy live entertainment, interactive games and activities and good picnic-style food. In addition, moon-watchers can see the stars through telescopes with help from astronomers while watching footage of the Apollo 11 landing on a giant inflated screen.
“UH-Clear Lake and NASA Johnson Space Center have maintained a steadfast partnership since the university first opened as an educational facility supporting the technical and scientific community NASA brought to the Clear Lake area,” explained Associate Vice President for University Advancement Dion McInnis. “‘Fly Me to the Moon’ lets us celebrate the amazing feat of man’s first step on the moon as well as UH-Clear Lake and NASA Johnson Space Center’s longtime relationship, both past and present.”
Among the guest speakers at the event is retired NASA engineer Glynn Lunney, who served as flight director during the historic Apollo 11 flight. Lunney’s activities with the manned space program range from Mercury through the Space Shuttle.
“We’re excited about having someone with Mr. Lunney’s expertise speak during this event,” added Director of Alumni and Community Relations Charity Ellis. “His vast experience with NASA and manned space flight will provide a real-life perspective.”
Lead sponsors for the event include United Space Alliance and JSC Federal Credit Union. Other sponsors include ARI Construction, Travel Dreams CWT Vacations – Diane Vest and Wyle Integrated Science and Engineering Group.
