New dean joins UH-Clear Lake
University of Houston-Clear Lake named Zbigniew J. Czajkiewicz as the university’s dean of the university’s School of Science and Computer Engineering. Czajkiewicz comes to UH-Clear Lake from Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania, where he was head of the Center of Applied Research in Engineering and Science.
“I’m back in a learning mode,” Czajkiewicz said, crediting his extensive experience in education and industry for his ability to manage multiple projects. “I’m working to assess the needs of faculty, staff and students as well as the community.”
That assessment will help him formulate goals which may include expanding undergraduate programs, developing a more integrated industrial graduate program, planning and implementing research projects, involvement with local businesses and, possibly, a research center. Meeting with industry and civic leaders is also high on his list of priorities.
Czajkiewicz said the increasing reliance on technical applications and computer instrumentation in Houston area’s medical facilities offers additional opportunities for faculty and students to develop interdisciplinary research.
“We have very strong science and computer engineering programs at UH-Clear Lake,” Czajkiewicz said. “Developing more technical engineering programs would give us all kinds of possibilities.”
At Robert Morris, Czajkiewicz managed and developed industry relations, conducted research, taught seminars and mentored undergraduate and graduate students. From 2000 to 2004, he was president of Computer Integrated Systems, a consulting company implementing computer integrated management systems.
A native of Poland, he earned his Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management from the Technical University of Wroclaw, Poland. He received his doctorate in Industrial Engineering – Computer Simulation from the same university in 1976.
Czajkiewicz was professor and chair of the Industrial Engineering Program and Director of Computer Integrated Manufacturing Center at California State University from 1989 to 2000. Prior to 1989, Czajkiewicz served as Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering and Graduate Program Director for Wichita State University. He also taught undergraduate and graduate courses in as a visiting professor at Texas Tech University and the University of Toledo during the late ’70s.
Pleased with the diversity of UH-Clear Lake, Czajkiewicz said he looks forward to continuing to attract international students and faculty from Europe, South America, Asia and the Middle East.
He admitted he was impressed with the university’s current graduate program.
“They’re doing all the right things that a successful organization should do,” Czajkiewicz added. “I see a bright future here.”
