Egypt Quotes from Student Reflection Papers, Summer 2007

Cairo is so safe. Because in Egypt you are not the faceless person that you are in America, you become a friend that they will remember every time they see you. This is probably one of the reasons that many of the group kept returning to the shop by the hotel, because every time one of us walked by the store every member of his family would say “welcome back friend.”

I found myself riding on camels up Mount Moses (Mt. Sinai in the Sinai Peninsula) without a care or ill feeling in the world. I just stared at the stars and reflected on how lucky I was to be in that particular situation. As the time passed and we inched up the mountain, I looked down the side of the mountain in its serenity, and felt mesmerized. At times I even felt overwhelmed with feelings of joy and happiness which are almost indescribable.

The Egyptian people were very welcoming to the group. There was never a time when I felt out of place.

These experiences were so valuable and priceless that no other person can take them from our hearts. I was truly blessed to have the opportunity to travel to such a unique country such as Egypt while at the same time earning six credits toward my master’s degree. UHCL offered an invaluable opportunity to broaden my cultural, education, and humanitarian efforts.

The family who owned the business across the street from the hotel was the best. I really enjoyed talking with them in the evening over tea…This was the cross cultural experience for me. I talked to his family about their lives, what they thought of America, we talked about September 11th and so on. This was the best experience for me. The best way to be with people is to meet with them where they are at and I really felt that connection.

I could not imagine that two weeks in a country could change me. No longer am I content in my comfortable American life….I want to live abroad. I want to help create everlasting change. This has led me to a potential change in career paths. I have contemplated being a Foreign Service Officer after talking with the Embassy people….I have thought about becoming a person that sends college students abroad. My future is up in the air now that I have returned from Egypt.
