Scholarship Requirements
and
Service Expectations

Graduate students applying for a CSLT II scholarship must meet all UHCL general education requirements and specific requirements of the School of Education. Participants will be selected based on the following criteria.

1. Grade point average from previous university coursework. Must have at least a 3.0 in last 60 hours.
2. High recommendation in three letters of reference; at least two should be from school administrators who can attest to the applicant’s interest in the candidate’s potential for leadership, interpersonal skills, teaching skills, and ability to work with Hispanic students.
3. Strong commitment to be a school librarian as assessed through an essay in which participants can address leadership activities and describe their beliefs of working in schools with large Hispanic populations.

First priority will be applicants with high leadership potential, highly successful teaching and effective interpersonal skills, and to Hispanic or bilingual participants from the six partner districts. A second priority is to those who have teaching experience with Hispanic students. However, participation in this project is open to all applicants from any public school district in Texas. A CSLT II Selection Committee comprised of the project and co-project directors, two curriculum specialists and the project coordinator will review the applications and essays to determine those semi-finalists who will have an oral interview with the candidates.

As a result of the recruitment and selection efforts in the districts, it is expected that two cohorts of 15 students each will be selected to participate in the program. Both cohorts will be in classes with regular SLIS candidates. Tuition and most fees will be paid for the cohorts. Participants will be responsible for other fees, for example, the GRE or Miller Analogies Test registration, textbooks, and state assessments, graduation and certification fees. Employment opportunities will be announced in classes and on the CSLT II website. If needed, additional assistance in locating employment will be available from the SLIS faculty and UHCL Career & Counseling Services.

Grant participants will sign assurances that they intend to continue working in school libraries for at least two years after completion of their school librarian education. In addition, they will agree to complete annual surveys on their career progress during their course work and for two years following their course work. The CSLT goals (as stated in the narrative) will increase the likelihood that project participants will continue in the profession as well as help assure that all school librarians are prepared as leaders to meet the needs of all students.

As per IMLS requirements grant participants are expected to repay their tuition and fee expenses to the grant account that has been paid by the IMLS grant if they drop out of the program. This repayment will allow other students to be selected for the CSLT II Grant.
