The Collaborative Bilingual Administrator Training (CBAT) Project is a partnership among the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) and seven school districts in the Houston/Galveston, Texas area that have a high need for certified bilingual school administrators (i.e., assistant principals and principals). School districts include
Clear Creek ISD,
Deer Park ISD,
Dickinson ISD,
Galena Park ISD,
Galveston ISD,
Goose Creek Consolidated ISD, and
Pasadena ISD.
The ultimate goal of CBAT is to better prepare school administrators to ensure English Language learners (ELLs) achieve high academic success. This professional development program is critical to the
No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 since principal leadership is vital to the improvement of schools. This goal will be achieved through
recruitment, training, and mentoring assistant principals and principals. The CBAT Project will prepare bilingual administrators in instructional leadership, community leadership, and systems management—key components of Principal Certification in Texas.
“Professional Development” provides information for administrators related to the education of English language learners. Modules present this information in a format that can be easily adapted for campus staff development activities. CBAT staff development presentations are introduced by background information and a summary of the activity to assist the viewer in extracting essential information.
The UHCL CBAT Project is supported by a five-year (2002-2007), Title III Professional Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Education, totaling $1,342,944.
