Community Programs and Services

NASA/UHCL Space Act Agreement
Established in 2009, the  formal agreement provides new opportunities for UHCL and NASA Johnson Space Center to collaborate on programs that enrich UHCL students’ experience and for NASA to disseminate information to the UHCL community about NASA’s mission, vision and goals.

Involvement in area Chambers of Commerce
UHCL actively participates in several local chambers of commerce, with special emphasis in the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Pearland Chamber of Commerce.

Program Launches and Community Lectures
Special events offered through a collaboration with UHCL academic programs to help launch new initiatives and provide programs of interest to the community.

Clear Lake Association of Senior Programs (CLASP)
A free community outreach program created to provide education and intellectual challenge to community friends of all ages.  In addition to the "Visions in Our Midst" Speaker Series, CLASP also provides short minicourses helpful to everyday living and to maintaining a healthy mind and body. Seniors, students, faculty, staff and community friends are invited to enjoy the challenge of learning about new and varied subjects.

Veterans Day Celebration
An annual celebration held on November 11 in UHCL’s Liberty Park for the surrounding community to honor all veterans. The free event features guest speakers, photographs, war memorabilia and stories of veterans and their families.

Report to the Community and Community Partnership Award presentation
Community friends, students, staff and faculty gather for this annual breakfast event, which highlights the President’s Report to the Community annual publication. The report provides a snapshot of the university’s revenue and academic, research and community programs, in  addition to showcasing key individuals and organizations that support the university and the year's donor lists. Each year, one or more organizations are chosen to receive UHCL’s Community Partnership Award, which is presented during the breakfast.

Community events hosted through partnerships with UHCL, include:

Super Sci-Tech Saturday
Super Sci-Tech Saturday is a one-day conference held every two years for girls in grades 6-8. The conference encourages girls to study math and science in high school and college by offering them hands-on experiences in mini-workshops that focus on math, science and technology related careers.

Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE)
The Texas Art Education Association’s Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) is the largest high school art competition in the nation. UHCL has hosted the event since 2000. More than 1,500 high school students from around the state attend the annual event, which will include art workshops led by local and international artists, college preparedness workshops and exhibits, scholarship competitions, guest artist demonstrations and student portfolio reviews.

First Robotics
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be. The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in competitions designed by a committee of engineers and other professionals. In January of each year, UHCL hosts the kick-off event for Houston’s Lone Star Region. United Space School Each July, UHCL hosts high school students from more than forty countries for the United Space School. Run by volunteers, the United Space School brings together students from all over the world to participate in a two week summer program centered on activities in and around NASA Johnson Space Center.
