For admission to UHCL, you must have earned an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts in Teaching or Associate of Science or completed at least 54 semester hours of college credit with a minimum 2.0 GPA from a regionally accredited university or college.
If you are admitted with one of the previously mentioned associate’s degrees, you must also meet the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirement and be eligible to return to the last institution attended. Please note, the School of Education requires applicants to have a minimum grade of C- in composition courses and math.
For those admitted with the 54 semester college hours with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or higher, the following is required:
The Texas State Education Code requires the assessment of all students in the areas of reading, writing and mathematical skills upon their initial entry into a Texas public institution of higher education. An applicant’s performance on the Texas Higher Education Assessment/Texas Academic Skills Program (THEA/TASP) exam will affect admissibility to UHCL. Entering students, from other Texas institutions, must have already satisfied these requirements or must have previously been exempted. Students entering from out of state or private institutions may satisfy TSI requirements based on a review of specific course work as determined by the UHCL Office of Admissions. If the THEA/TASP exam is taken, all sections must be passed prior to admission. Students may receive an exemption from the TSI requirement through examinations, degree status or course work.
All students regardless of immigration status who are citizens of countries where English is not the native language must demonstrate English proficiency by taking the TOEFL prior to admission. A score of 550 on the paper exam of the TOEFL is required with section scores of at least 50. A score of 213 is required on computer-based TOEFL scores. A minimum score of 6.0 is required on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and 79-80 on the internet-based test (ibt) TOEFL. Scores cannot be more than two years old. Only scores sent from the testing center will be accepted. UHCL’s Web site and catalog lists possible ways to qualify for a TOEFL waiver.
