Online Sexual Activity

Dr. Elizabeth Maynard

Recent research has suggested that Online Sexual Activity is prevalent and may be negatively related to individual, family, and community functioning.  The use of online sexual materials has become problematic for many teens and adults and represents and emerging area of addiction research and treatment.  Elizabeth will offer a review of the recent literature in this area and share illustrative examples of this emerging addiction from the assessment and treatment of individuals in a university clinic setting.

Program Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the prevalence of online sexual behaviors among Americans
  2. Discuss the potentially negative consequences of online sexual activity for clients
  3. Discuss the comorbidity of problematic online sexual activity with psychiatric disorders such as depression, eating disoders, and substance abuse.
  4. Apply knowledge to work with individual clients in a counseling center context
