TUCCC 2008 Conference Program

Motivational Interviewing

Dr. Santhi Periasamy, Texas Woman’s University

The two hour seminar will provide the participants with an introduction to the philosophy and techniques of Motivational Interviewing (MI), an evidenced-based therapeutic style that has found several applications in the field of mental and physical health behavior change, including addiction treatment, depression, chronic disease management, eating issues, obesity prevention, HIV prevention, and various other areas of mental concerns. MI relies on the use of egalitarian, client-centered techniques aimed at exploring and possible resolving one’s ambivalence around change. The program will rely on participant interaction, experiential exercises, and possible video demonstrations. The seminar will provide more information for a professional who may be considering whether or not MI may be a helpful approach for use in their clinical setting.

Dr. Periasamy has been working extensively in the field of Motivational Interviewing (MI) for approximately 8 years and was formally trained by Drs. Miller and Rollnick in Italy (July 2001). Dr. Periasamy originally worked on a large scale grant funded by the NIH, the American Heart Association, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with Dr. Ken Resnicow at Emory University’s School of Public Health.  The grant was aimed at using Motivational Interviewing to increase fruit and vegetable intake/physical activity in African American church populations in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Dr. Periasamy has provided over 30+ national trainings on the use of Motivational Interviewing in public health settings. Dr. Periasamy has also served as a MI consultant/trainer for the Center of Disease Control, the American Dietetic Association, Emory University’s School of Public Health, State WIC programs, the American Cancer Society, the National Center of Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University etc. and has provided presentations for psychologists, physicians, dietitians, nursing faculty, and other medical providers.
